I just got back from an awesome weekend with WEIRD IS THE NEW COOL. If you follow my blog you might remember me talking about them in my High 5 and Merry Skiing and a Happy Vegas posts. But I guess this weekend there is a lot more to talk about than the last two times! But lets start from the beginning.
Weird is the new cool is a Reaggae, Rock, Funk band from Tempe Arizona. Kyle Collins ( singer/songwriter), Nate Verwoert (guitar), Cash Murphy (guitar), Kenny Porter (bass), Tim Yokley (drumms) and Omni (keyboard). They just finished a 3 weeks tour through America (or at least parts of it) with another band called Fayuca. The spark the flame tour started in Vegas on Jan 3rd followed by shows in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and (best part of it) California. This weekend was the last weekend of their tour and they came all the way out to Riverside and San Diego. Sooo... what did I do!? Sure... what do you think... of course I went there to see them! It was def worth the drive. I feel kinda bad because every time I watch them there is kinda of a lack of audience ... So in Riverside I was kinda the only one dancing. I tried getting people up to the dance floor but it did not work that well. I cant help it the music always makes me wanna dance! Especially the songs Arizona and Freak! (Check em out on iTunes, Spotify, YouTube or wherever! You will like them!)
With or without people dancing it was still a great show and def. a good after show. Especially cause I kinda started to get to know more about the guys. I really have to admit that I had a totally different picture of each one of them when I first met them but talking to them opened my eyes and showed me again that the first impression is not always true.
Before we headed out to San Diego the next day we went for a quick breakfast to a bar. Jup a bar... Why... because you can get bloody marys in bars. NOPE I did not drink one... I tried it but YUCK I could not drink a whole glass of it... How can you guys drink that all the time? ;)
We got to San Diego pretty early but whatever, some pizza, some beer and playing some "what's the difference" helped killing time.
Unfortunately was there so much time to kill that Kenny (bass) and I got kinda bored and started walking around the streets to check out whats going on at Ocean Beach. We kinda ended up in a hair studio where we spontaneously decided to get Kenny a new haircut. It was sooo much fun! Especially cause the hairdresser was 3 margaritas deep! But the spontaneous things are always most fun!! He did a good job tho and Kenny was finally looking good for the stage! The gig at Gallagher's was a little different than the ones I saw before. They played two sets and and different songs than at the other shows. I was kinda happy about it because they played one of my favorite songs called Another stupid love song. I had a blast dancing, singing and drinking all night long!I guess it is hard to explain why I had such a great time and why I enjoy watching them. I guess you have to see or hear them yourself. I really hope they keep on doing what they are doing and maybe one day they also be known in Germany and other countries. If you really want to know why I like them so much just listen to their songs and you will know! Especially the song I recommend now!!! It's my favorite WINC song called I start to think and it gives me a big smile on the face every time I listen to it. Why is this my favorite song? That's easy... The lyrics are amazing. It just constantly reminds me of enjoying my life and doing the things I like and go to go my way. My favorite sentence in the song says "The ultimate task is to let yourself go, free you mind, be alive, and breathe it in slow, cause once you get away from it all and you fall in love trust me she knows, she knows she knows.." These lyrics help me to shut of my mind and enjoy freaking life. Thanks guys for this amazing song.
I think at this point I have to give a big thank you to WEIRD IS THE NEW COOL! You are awesome and I hope your music spreads around the world! I ll give my best to help you cause you deserve it! I know you had a fun but also weird and exhausting tour. You've been through some tough times but I guess every band has to go through that! Rock on you are awesome and I am so glad I met each one of you! Thank you big time!!
